Canadian Federation of Agriculture - Information on Tariffs

General tariff and counter-tariff info from Canadian Federation of Agriculture.

Yesterday, the U.S. administration imposed a new wave of tariffs on countries around the world, including a baseline 10% reciprocal tariff on all countries (except Canada and Mexico) effective April 5th, followed by varying degrees of incremental reciprocal tariffs for countries around the world (again not including Canada and/or Mexico) effective April 9th.

It is important to stress that no new tariffs were announced yesterday that would directly impact Canada. However, previously announced tariffs against Canada remain or came into effect yesterday, notably:

  • On March 4, 2025, the U.S. imposed 25 per cent tariffs on CUSMA non-compliant Canadian goods, and 10 per cent tariffs on energy imports from Canada.
  • On March 12, 2025, the U.S. imposed 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum products.
  • On April 3, 2025, previously announced U.S. tariffs of 25 per cent on Canadian automobiles came into effect

In response, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced yesterday new targeted countermeasures including:

  • Twenty-five per cent tariffs on non-CUSMA compliant fully assembled vehicles imported into Canada from the United States.
  • Twenty-five per cent tariffs on non-Canadian and non-Mexican content of CUSMA compliant fully assembled vehicles imported into Canada from the United States.
  • Canada’s intention to develop a framework for auto producers that incentivizes production and investment in Canada.

A full list of Government support measures is attached for reference. The government has also established a remission process to consider requests for exceptional relief from Canadian tariffs on U.S. goods.
